After hiking north to meet the fire, it takes off and we retreated back to camp to round up our stuff.
The trees you see in the foreground are the trees on fire in the next photos. We are preparing to burn in front of the approaching fire. Mostly because what we light will be drawn away, keeping embers from falling around us.
1988: This "burnout" near Lake Abundance, north of Silver Gate, Montana, was also famously photographed by Craig Fujii, of the Seattle Times. It appeared the following year on the Cover of National Geographic.

We were going to burn out as the fire approached our safety zone, so they sent the press home. Mr. Rogge said to Craig, "stick around if you can" so I guess as any good news photographer, Craig pleaded for just a little time as they slowly make their way out.
